my answer to your question...great attraction for the tourists...was on a tube once and an Amercian lady was sat next to me, we were chatting about London in general and attractions, she was sooo "excited" in saying Jeeeeeee yo guys are soooo lucky having the Royals...

Because if you voted for a head of state you could end up with a Richard Nixon or George W. Bush. Given that choice, the monarchy looks really good!

Even civilised society made up of thinking and wisened adults can't get enough of fairy tales in their childhood perhaps? No wonder because stories about royalty have put us to SLEEP(it continues to do so now even when I'm up on my feet, LOL) growing up. Many out there are still on the lookout for Prince Charming. All civilised societies have a hierarchical structure, whether it be a constitutional monarchy such as The United Kingdom or a republic as other countries have.

There is no ideal in life: we require a Head of State, ours happens to be Her Majesty The Queen. Whilst I would probably agree that our system of monarchy is anachronistic, it still serves the British mind set.  Britain would not be the same as a republic: we as a nation need the ceremony and pomp that goes with the Monarchy. The Monarchy has lasted over a thousand years : if it isn't broken, why try to mend it?

history - Europe (and countries elsewhere) had royalty in some form for most of recorded history.

Whether Britain and commonwealth countries should end royalty is a matter of debate.  I have little interest in the royals, but I also have no interest in tying up parliament on deciding what should replace it.  And the Queen is a diplomat and royalty attracts tourist money.  The Royal Family now is also a source of amusement.

We have royalty because every country without exception needs a Head of State, ours happens to be a monarch. I'd rather have an unelected politcallly neutral Head of State rather than an elected politician who's first loyalty is not to the people but to his party.

I mean if you have an elected Head of State you get people like George W Bush 'nuff said.
