Question:

Why do we have to fill a quota of volunteer hours in order to graduate?

I understand that it's to contribute to society, but really, shouldn't they be called voluntold hours? It's not like we actually get a choice in whether we do them or not.

  1. You have a choice - you can not do them.

    The idea is *not* to shove volunteerism down your throat, just so you know.  

    The idea is to force you to look around and recognize that you can have a positive impact on the world - *and* you just might find something you enjoy doing.  

    When I graduated from high school in *censored*, we didn't have mandated volunteerism; but it helped to get into college, we were told.  So I did it...and discovered that I liked helping people, which, to be honest, was something I never thought I'd care about.

  3. Because they are hoping that somewhere in a self centered existence students will learn the valuable lesson of compassion & empathy.

  4. It makes you a more well rounded person.  Takes away from the snobbery and self-centered, egotistical attitudes of certain individuals.
