Question:

Why do we have to follow the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h) and not just follow the Qur'an?

Proof of the importance of the Sunnah from the Qur'an itself:

1.Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah...” [4:80] Allah described obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him) as being a part of obedience to Him. Then He made a connection between obedience to Him and obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him): “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger...” [4:59]

2. Allah warns us not to go against the Prophet (peace be upon him), and states that whoever disobeys him will be doomed to eternal h**l. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “...And let those who oppose the Messenger’s commandment beware, lest some fitnah (trial, affliction, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.” [24:63]

3.Allah has made obedience to His Prophet a religious duty; resisting or opposing it is a sign of hypocrisy: ”But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you [Muhammad] judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” [4:65]

4.Allah commands His slaves to respond to Him and His Messenger: “O you who believe! Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life...” [8:24]

5.Allah also commands His slaves to refer all disputes to him: “... (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger...” [4:59]

6.Allah also calls all people who accept Allah but refute the Messenger as 'Real Kafirs': “Verily, those who deny Allâh and His Messengers and (those who) wish to separate Allah from His Messengers (by believing in Allâh and disbelieving in His Messengers), saying: "We believe in some but reject others": and (those who) wish to adopt a way in between. They are in truth (equally) Unbelievers; and We have prepared for Unbelievers a humiliating Punishment. To those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of the Messengers, We shall soon give their (due) rewards: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.” [4:150-153]

  1. You point is very nice and very good...thank you very much for this explanation... however it is preferable if you say we are worshipers for Allah rather than Slaves... because salve in the state of being a salve for human beings... but we are created by Allah and he commands us to worship him therefore we worshipers in every thing we do to be obedient  for Allah... Right?

  2. Brother,

How about myself who belief 100% on AlQuran but selective on sunnah/hadiths, am I not a Muslim?

(In my opinion, I believe what written in the Quran about following the Sunnah is during the time of our Rasulullah saw. The people who were with him ought to follow his examples. No doubt. However, afyer his death & as time 200 yrs passed by, there must be some fabrications which I think we have to be selective, especially on hadiths)

  3. Because quran is the text book, and hadith is the workbook.

  4. My hadeethes are AUTHENTIC and your hadeethes are FABRICATED.

Not all sunni collections authentic and same to shia collections.

Hadeethes are good to see how prophet did certain deeds.

but most are due to conflicts among sahaba and tabie, many scholars were employees of rulers.

All hadeethes which are contarary to quran should be rejected.or some can be explained according to quran.

  5. JazakAllah for sharing the information :).

Its simple, Quran is a guidance book, a perfect manual for spending a perfect life and Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is a practical example whose life span tells us that how the guideline of Quran should be followed.

Edit:- Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are the most authentic books on hadiths and they discuss huge variety of subjects a Muslim may need for guidance.

  6. We dont HAVE to, there is co compulsion in religion, but f u wish to follow Islam then u must bcuz in Quran-a-Kareem God tells us to follow Muhammad SAW.

  7. Salam for you my dear friend. We muslims should follow Allah and also Rasool Muhammad pbuh because:

1)Allah instructed that as in thenverses have been quoted

2)Not all instruction were written in the holy Qur'anThere many hadits qudsi given by Allah to Muhammad but there are not stated in the Qur'an

3)There were many acts, saying and examples given by Muhammad pbuh in his hadits as explanations how to practise it in our daily lives such how to pray, how to make a wudhu etc

  8. The proof that the Sunnah is from the legislation is the statement of Allaah:

    مَّنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللّهَ وَمَن تَوَلَّى فَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا

((He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allaah; but if any turn away, We have not sent thee to watch over their (evil deeds).)) (Surah an-Nisaa: 80)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said that there will be a group of people, who will say,

((What is found in the Book of Allaah as Haraam we pronounce it Haraam, Surely I am given the Quraan and something like it.)) (Imaam al-Albaanee recorded this from at-Tirmidhee in "Manzilat asSunnah fil Islaam", 17)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

((There will be a man to whom my hadeeth will reach him, while he is sitting comfortably, and he will say between me and you is the book of Allaah, whatever we find in it that is halaal we will make it halaal, and whatever we find in it haraam we will make it haraam. Then the Prophet says: whatever the messenger of Allaah has made haraam is as if Allaah has made it haraam.)) (Sunan at-Tirmidhee 5/38)

Imaam adh-Dhahabee recorded in his Siyaar A’laam an-Nubalaa (11/297) that Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal said:

من ردَّ حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فهو على شفا هلكة

((Whoeever rejects a Hadeeth of the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then he is on the brink of destruction))

Imaam Aboo Ismaa’eel al Haraawee narrated in his Dhamm al Kalaam (228) that Imaam al-Humaydee who was the Shaykh and Teacher of Imaam al-Bukhaaree said:

والله! لأن أغزو هؤلاء الذين يَرُدُّون حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أحبُّ إلي من أن أغزو عِدَّتهم من الأتراك

((By Allaah, that I war against those who reject the hadeeth of the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is more beloved to me than that I should war against the same number of Non-Muslims))

    7. Can a perfect religion have imperfection within it? Quranis say No. Hadith'ites say Yes. Before the hadith'ite replies, he/she should re-read the answer to question 4 + 5 again.

  11. May Allah bless you for speaking the Truth. Take heed O Qur'aniyoon!

  12. I am not a rejector of hadiths..I am proud to follow my Prophet..But even some so-called authentic hadiths do not make any sense to me..

    like that of 72 virgins..

    Edit:

Oh,ok thank you for letting me know that my thinking doesn't make sense..I wonder what your(all who don't agree with me) sense brings changes to this world..??

Believeing that earth is flat and ,not praying behind an Imam with no beard,no matter how god he and his character is,pouring acid on ladies face for not wearing purda duh??
