  1. Because waiters and waitresses depend on tips. They only get paid roughly 2.85 an hour from their employer, so tips makes up the rest of their income.

  2. Because service staff don't make minimum wage. Where I am from we make $3.14/hour plus tips. And we are taxed on our sales so if you don't tip your server, not only are they not walking out with any money that night, you actually COST them money by forcing them to claim your meal on their nightly sales. 15% minimum unless the service was absolutely awful.

  3. tip is actually an acronym TIPS= To Insure Proper Service.

  4. Cause people in the service Industry , Get paid Pretty Much NOTHING (2.16 a hour , which is usually taken away due to taxes) . They rely on Tips to pay Bills they have familys too , there not waiting on people for Fun .. I promise !

  5. People who rely on tips don't make minimum wage.....they average about half of what minimum wage is paid by their employer.....employers do this because they know that a good server will more than make up for that in tips.  These people are relying on tips for their pay. (ie - wage is 6.15/hr - they pay about 2.60 - 3.00/hr + tips, for an example)

  6. TIP= To Insure proper Service.

In the US wait staff gets a low wage and they are rewarded with providing excellent service or rewarded acccordingly.  When someone goes out of the way and does a little extr they should be rewarded accordingly.

  7. bc the workers make less than min wage, there salaries are based on tips

  8. We don't have to give tips, but a lot of us find pleasure when we make our sales person happy with a few extra bills

  9. it's just polite, but it's weird cause they expect it if you want to be polite or not so it's kind of rude in there place, but good question.

  10. I tjust seems right to do. The person is providing you a service, so why not?

  11. Tipping benefits the waiter/waitress (obviously).

It benefits the customer because he/she has some control over the quality of service.

It benefits the restaurant owner because they can pay lower wages than otherwise.

And it benefits the revenue service because they make you pay taxes on tips.

    So everyone wins.

  12. The previous posts are correct - they get paid very little.

But I think there's another reason - it motivates people to provide the best possible service. People leave higher tips for exceptional service.

  13. because the waiters barely get paid...show curiosity

  14. Because if u don,t ;being there the next time u will not be served well.

  15. minimum wage sucks and waitresses make little to no money without tips. also, it encourages your waiter to be kinder and more helpful

  16. As a hotelier, a tip to me is a sign of gratitude from the tipper for the good service and food he or she experienced. No doubt, it is extra income for us service providers, but to know that the particular customer actually feels it was worth it to tip, makes it more motivating and makes us feel appreciated. When I dine, and have a good experience, I would tip the waiter personally and thank him for the service offered.

  17. Most profesions where people tip are for services that can vary a great deal in quality and the tip is a way for the customer to reward quality they percieve.

You don't tip an auto mechanic because the labor to fix your car costs what it costs and either he fixed it and earned his fee or he didn't an owes you money.

You tip a barber because you pay him to cut your hair and as long as you leave with less hair then you went in with, he held up his end.  Thing is, the way he cuts your hair can be good or bad.  If it's good, you acknowledge that via a tip.

  18. It's to show some generosity....i guess.

  19. Most servers and bartenders only make around $3 an hour. That doesn't even cover their taxes. They make only what is given to them as a tip for their service. Then they have to tipout (give money to someone else) a percentage of what you give them to the person who sat you, the person that put your food together, the person that made your drink (even if you don't order a drink from the bar, they have to tip them), and the person who will clean your table when you leave.

If you leave them 15% they usually only really make 10% of that.

I tip 20% on my checks always.

  20. Those who receive tips are paid less than minimum wage.  15% or more is a good tip.  Wait persons are taxed between 10-15%.  Tip more id the waiter deserves it.

  21. Tips are left for extra ordinary service

Also waiters and waitresses are very poorly paid.

If you have someone bringing food to you which youll eat

you want to be friendly not antagonistic

Try to remember that this person works, has a family has bills, etc Your Post man brings Checks and packages!

Your garbageman has a smelly job, hot rainy cold weather every day. Your child's teacher can get a simple present to thnak the perspon for taking the time and energy to taech your child every day.

Some teachers are so special, that a child will become a engineer, doctor, researcher because of that influence.

  22. Because most people in the service industry get paid well below minimum wage, their income is dependent upon your tips.  I used to bartend in college, I got paid $2.87/hour.  My paycheck every two weeks was about $40, hard to get by on a paycheck like that.

  23. because waitress only make $2.65 an hour so they depend on tips to make decent money!!!

also tips ensure good service.  if you dont tip the pizza boy, he could remember your address next time around.....

  24. Because a waiter/waitress hourly rate is c**p. 2.15 an hour when I was doing it. Blame the restaurants.

  25. In Olde Englishe Taverns, wait-staff worked free-lance.

They'd take your order & your money & bring your food.

Since they were usually illiterate, the customer wrote the bill.

They would add T.I.P. & an amount on the bottom.

    It meant "To Insure Promptness".

  26. Tips originally meant "To Insure Prompt Service."  Nowadays, it seems to be mandatory.  This is something I do not believe in.  People should do their best at their job regardless the position.  If they don't like the wages being paid, then they should find something else to do.  I also think service industry employees need to be paid in a similar manner as the rest of the working world.  When we go out to eat, etc. we should expect it to be more expensive because people are being paid a liveable wage.  That would cut out all of this tipping nonsense and its accompaning under reporting .

  27. I might be wrong, but I think everyone is missing the point of the question. Which I'm sorry to say, I don't have the answer to.

The question is: Why don't they get paid 'regular' wages like everyone else.. that they NEED to be tipped in the first place?

I think at one time, SOMEbody thought that their employees were sloppy and poor at their jobs, and that the customers should be the one to scold or praise the waiter by the amount he (she) was paid. That way, the owner isn't to blame, and the waiter gets the hint that if they want their money/pay, they must smile and bring their food, w/o wiping their nose first with the napkin they are bringing to the table. Can you  imagine the kind of service there would be w/o tipping? Dirty dishes, spotty glasses, and all the other things we give lower tips for. IF there weren't tips, everyone would do it wrong and there would be no incentive for better standards.

  28. the staff at restaurants are paid a very low wage and they make up their wage from tips . the restaurants also price their food at lower price .

this is a standard practice in usa so tip according to the service you get.

  29. Because waitresses and busboys traditionally are only paid 1 or 2 dollars per hour for their work!  They rely upon tips to make a living!

  30. Usually the people you tip are paid only minimum wage, which is very small. They depend on the tips they get from customers for the quality of service they provide. I like the idea of tipping because I know the server will be more likely to try to please you more.
