Why do we honor our veterans ?

are you really asking this question?  I am sure you would not be asking this question if you were the veteran and risked you life for your country.  Why dont you try doing that and i am sure you will answer your question

answer for a school project: because they defend the freedoms.

my real answer: we should honor people in the peace corps more than our veterans because they help give a good image to America while our troops just show how little we care about civilian casualties.

i think that if Americans elect a president in the peace corps rather than in the army.  many foreign conflicts will be solved peacefully rather than by sending troops.

Watch wind talkers that is based on world war 2, maybe then you will understand veterans day. There are a lot of war movies based on history's wars, but I find that one to be the best the american indians helped us even after what the early settlers did to them.

Because they sacraficed all to defend the freedoms that we enjoy today.  Freedoms that poeple in other countries around the world can only dream of having.  The freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, freedom of the press, along with thousands of other freedoms.  Thousands of other freedoms.  

Some gave their lives to defend these freedoms.  Some sacraficed time away from their families to defend these freedoms.  Some sacraficed everything for the freedoms.  You know how the saying goes:  All gave some, some gave all.  Everyone who has served in the military has given up something, has sacraficed something in order to do so, whether it be their own lives, life with their family, career goals, the best part of their lives, time, freedoms that civilians enjoy and take for granted, you name it, they have sacraficed it.

And that is why we honor our veterans - to thank them for fighting to defend and protect our freedom.

We honor our Men an Women in the military because they sacrifice their personal freedoms so that average citizens might be able to exercise theirs.  Members of the military, risk their life, for their fellow man, and as a result should be honored.  Regarding the Peace Corp.  They are a noble organization, but I did not see them risking their lives to drop needed food behind the Iron curtain when the USSR blockaded Berlin, nor did I see them making fresh water, or rescuing refugee's in Malaysia, New Orleans, or Somalia.  It is not the Peace Corp that goes into Harms way to save anyone from Genocide (Germany,1945, China,1945, Phillipines....Grenada 1980's...Kuwait 1990...Croatia, 1990's.) I know I left out alot but there's too many to list.

because they risk there lives every single day to make sure the rest of us are safe. some go days with out food or water. they see and do things that are to harsh to even put on the news. they go threw so much everyday and some people dont even want to offer one day every year to honor them. those are the people that im disgusted with. theyre one of the reason americas so great.

We live in a country that thrives on the idea of personal and individual freedom.  Veterans (especially now) sacrifice all that is most basic to this idea by giving up their freedom in order to protect yours.

You got to be kiding me are 7th graders not taught this? Well imagine this.. this is what a lot of people grandma and grandpa's age went through.. so grandpa came home after working all day to have Military police at his house and his mom crying.. his dad was tortured then had his head blown off from the Korean's.. do you see why we honer them? why they die to keep the terrorists from coming over here and killing you and your parents.. they protect us.. honor them every day and you truly only know unless youv'e been in the service like me.. it's not fun to have bullets flying 4 inches away from you head!

I think the people who fight/fought for our country are very impotant and deserve to be honored. They think more about american people they don't even know, than themselves. They put their very lives at risk for us. That's the true definition for a hero, and that's why we honor them. Remember, a country who forgets thier veterans, is soon forgoten.

Most countries have a holiday such as Remembrance Day to honor veterans, along with the war dead. For the most part, veterans are treated with great respect in society.  Veterans played a central role in World Wars.

Because of the often terrible things they are required to do in support of their nation. Not many citizens find themselves in that position, and when they do and survive, they ennoble the rest of us.
