Question:

Why do we label ourselves?

My question is : Why do we label ourselves? Why do we all feel the need to call each other preppy, scene, emo, indie, skater, etc.? I'm a junior in highschool and I see this all the time, not only at school but here on Answers, too. Why can't people just wear what they want and not care if people label them. I might wear American Eagle alot but I don't think it makes me preppy. I listen to indie rock but I don't think I'm indie. Why can't we just stop with the labels, wear what we want and stop putting down others for the way they look?

  1. i agree

it seems silly when people say "im preppy" or "im scene" and they feel like they have to fit exculsively to that category and i get the feeling sometimes people MAKE themselves fit into the category by listening to certain music, dressing a certain way, even acting a certain way..

i dont see why people cant just be themselves and allow themselves to really be a variety of different styles alltogether. for example, im sort ofa nerd, honestly. but then i usually dress sort of preppy. and then i love to listen to led zeppelin. whats wrong with some variety?! i also hate it when others judge eachother by appearancesor first impressions.

  2. because we can. it might not be good but its cuz its easier to label ppl then for everyone to be unique

  3. I agree.

  4. I AGREE!

people are better off being unique, and not a label. I wear a lot of ae/aeropostale/abercrombie/hollister, i like the beatles, blink-182, nirvana, and nsync, i wear converse, and i do ballet. none of it makes a stereotype but i still like all of it.

    just be yourself peopleee (:

  5. I TOTALLY AGREE!

Everyone calls me goth but like oneday I will come in with tripp pants and the next I will be wearing a flower sundress, it's liek "Wtf?" Sorry i can't stand people who label and people who are fake. Sorry.

  6. Why do we label animals?  Why do we feel the need to sort them into groups...I mean, "mammals?"  "Reptiles?"

    We're just putting them down.

  7. That unfortunately seems to be the norm in a school setting.  There is a lot of peer pressure which is really too bad.

You will find that once you leave the school scene that there are less labels flying around.

Adults seem to accept themselves better and other adults are less critical.

I wear what I want.  And I always embrace my personal  ideology:

"Your opinion of me doesn't matter UNLESS you are willing to pay my way through life."

Hang in there....only two more years
