Why do we laugh?

Contrary to popular belief, it is rarely about humor.  Sometimes it is an expression of joy, but sometimes it signifies something entirely diifferent - an interesting evolutionary mechanism.  New York Public Radio (WNYC) recently did a radio show on the science of laughter, as part of their "Radiolab" series.  I think you will find it very informative.

We laugh because it just so random..........It's a beautiful thing.......it's so arbitrary sometimes.i mean like, it's so spontaneous. ........We can't help it..........it's inside..........it's a beautiful thing to laugh.

It may ensue (as a physiological reaction) from jokes, tickling and other stimuli. Inhaling nitrous oxide can also induce laughter; other drugs, such as cannabis, can also induce episodes of strong laughter.

Strong laughter can sometimes bring an onset of tears or even moderate muscular pain. Laughter is a part of human behaviour regulated by the brain. It helps humans clarify their intentions in social interaction and provides an emotional context to conversations. Laughter is used as a signal for being part of a group — it signals acceptance and positive interactions with others

When you think something is funny or amusing you laugh.

What should we do?? Cry.??

Humor, laughter is  like an emotion. Your ancestors,  ancestors developed this during evolution.

Who knows??? We just do!
