  1. Why do we have oil pressure guages in our vehicles??  Low pressure may indicate a leak (loss of fuild) or a weak pump (weak heart).  High pressure may indicate to much fluid (fluid retention) or to much resistance in the car engine (too much stress or an illness).  Keeping oil and blood pressures in recommended ranges is best for healthy outcomes.  BTW.... If you get stressed WHEN you take your BP Reading, it will tend to measure high.  Our BP is what it is, even if we dont measure it.  So measure it with calm thoughts thanks.

  2. Because if it gets too high for too long you could have a heart attack or stroke. There are several issues with high blood pressure.

In all it tells us how much work is the heart doing to pump blood through your system

  3. Blood pressure is measured using a sphygnomanometer, it measures your systolic and diastolic readings to see if you have high blood pressure (hypertension) or low blood pressure (hypotension). Hypertension is common amongst older people, especially men, is caused by diet, lifestyle factors, smoking and alcohol.

You measure blood pressure to see if you have high blood pressure, which means you could have a greater risk of getting a heart attack (cardiac infarction), or other conditions such as stroke, atherioschlerosis.

  4. High blood pressure causes heart disease and stroke - the biggest killers in UK and US.  One in three people have high blood pressure.

The only way to know what your blood pressure measurements are is to have it measured using a blood pressure monitor.

Old style sphygmanometers are considered unreliable as they depend on the users' hearing and refelcses to record the  moments that the pulse stops and starts.

Automatic blood pressure monitors are now used widely by medical professionals and people who want to monitor their blood pressure at home.

There is an up to date list of machines recommended by the British Hypertension Society at http://www.blood-pressure-monitoring.org along with a free fact sheet "How to Measure Blood Pressure"

  5. Because we get a lollipop when the doctors done with us (lol). all the above answers are right.

  6. So that we can see if your heart and blood circulation is working o.k.

  7. Your blood pressure is simply a measurement of the pressure it takes for your heart to force blood out of your heart and into arteries. Arteries carry oxygenated blood throughout your circulatory system, to every cell, tissue, and organ within your body.

We measure blood pressure to check and see if you have high blood pressure.

If your doctor tells you that you have high blood pressure, do everything you can to get it back under control. Medications, a change of diet and exercise work wonders on high blood pressure. But if possible, try to prevent such measures by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Stay away from high fat foods, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and make sure that you exercise every day, even if it’s a walk around the block after a long day at work.

High blood pressure can be a precurser to strokes, heart attacks and other diseases.
