  1. If you're talking about special education as in for kids with learning disabilities (I think), then it's important for kids with these problems to be placed in special classes so they can even have a chance at learning. I am the father of eight kids. Three of them are in special ed because of learning problems, namely dislexia. Without the special classes, they would fall so far behind that they'd never catch up enough to learn anything. Some people think "sped" is just a babysitting class for retards. I beg to differ and can offer a bit of proof. Thanks to "sped" and the help they give my oldest son through vo-tech training, he now (at 23) works as a welder at a major oil rig building operation and lives life as a very productive member of society. Without "sped", he'd more than likely be living at home with me and his Mom slinging burgers somewhere.

  2. What do you mean??  Why do we need to STUDY special education?

  3. If you're going to be a teacher, you WILL encounter students who are in special programs (ranging from mentally impared, to learning disabilities, to behavioral disordered, to mildly autistic, to gifted), so you have to know how to read and utilize their IEP's and how to conduct yourself at a SAT/IEP meeting, how to modify assignments, etc.  Also, when teaching at lower grades, (from grade 11 down), you need to know what to look for in case no one has identified a special needs student who may need to be tested to be HELPED.

  4. We need it for student's with learning disabilities.  They can achieve their educational goals when lessons are modified.
