  1. One of the world's problems is lack of food. Food costs money. "Free" food that's donated costs money, because it has to be shipped to where it's needed and storage facilities have to be built or staffed for it. The tools people need to grow food cost money -- and, again, even if you get tools donated, someone has to pay for them to be shipped where they need to go. Training costs money -- the person doing the training needs to be paid, someone has to pay for creating culturally-appropriate and location-specific materials, someone has to supervise the training program to make sure it's doing what it should (donors demand accountability), etc. And volunteers -- people who aren't paid for their work -- are never free: someone has to train them, supervise them, and provide for their security.

So that's one of the world's problems -- hunger. And there are all the things that cost money to address the issue. There's also armed conflict, HIV/AIDS, lack of health care, profound and often violent discrimination of women, lack of jobs, corruption, environmental degradation, climate change, and on and on. All of those costs money to solve for similar reasons.
