Why do we need to further study hydrogen as a viable source of energy?

Hydrogen is the smallest atom and will leak through almost anything. I have worked with liquid helium and it was always leaking. Hydrogen is the most explosive of anything .If it is used in a car type motor it will produce NO2 or photo chemical smog.

I do not think we need to.  I had a chemistry professor who did research on hydrogen fuel and he essentially proved that it was impossible to use hydrogen as a viable source of energy.  Hydrogen is simply to reactive.  It is hard to control the reaction and it is simply too powerful to contain on a large scale.
