Why do we need to have a contact with network company (like AT&T in US or Globe telecom in the pHils)?

i have been waiting for ipHone 3g to be released here in the Philippines. I plan to buy one for my self. instead of buying the unit itself. I have so many questions, but why can't We buy teh unit itself and need to haev contract something.... for us to have it..

Unfortunately, the iPhone is the only cell phone with ATT that you must have a certain plan. The reason behind it is pure business, more profit for them. The plan that comes with the iPhone is fairly reasonable, that is the lowest plan, which is $69.99 I believe (I could be wrong) but you must have a data plan which is the kicker. However, you don't have to buy the iPhone through AT&T you can buy it unlocked from another vendor - I haven't tried playing dumb and using it with another plan though: it's worth a try.
