  1. as another said you don't have to  this custom was started by the Catholic Popes many years ago in conjunction with the people who makes the candles and they split the money

    When we are offering prayer , we are believing in GOD nd so we are praying.

    In all religions God is supposed to be LIGHT.

    So we light up candles or jyoti beore we offer prayer so that our minds can be steady on the God as we see the LIGHT before us.

    So , we light the candles.
