  1. You need to have a diverse base before rising to other things.

  2. What subjects do you mean? You are taught a variety of subjects so you can develop and learn. A subject could show a passion that you have and want to pursue later in life. Every class that I have taken has helped me expand my knowledge and become well rounded.

  3. Maybe they are needed in something called "living"?

  4. The only reason is state or district wide testing. The state or city wants to see how students learn, apply, and remember what they've learned by making them study subjects and testing the students on them.

  5. The greatest role of education is not to provide content but to teach you *how* to think and reason.

Believe it or not, most of the time it's a test of how well you can reason, whether or not you can learn, and how well you are able to process information that you have been given.

When it comes down to wire, your education has been successful if you are able to locate and intelligently process on your own  the information that you need in life.
