  1. Cause Aikido isn't a sport, and that MMA/UFC garbage is. It also takes time and dedication to develope skill in, which goes against the american way. Ha.

  2. Aikido practictioners do not fight for sport. Fighting for money goes against the whole philosophy of Aikido.

I think its silly to say Aikido wouldn't work in MMA since there is no evidence.

  3. Because it doesn't work.  Small joint manipulation isn't realistic outside a classroom scenario.

I'm sure any Aikidoist who disagreed would find any number of MMA fighters that would take them on with small joint stuff allowed.  Walk into your local MMA camp and drop a challenge if you don't believe me.

MMA is the proving ground for modern unarmed martial arts.  Aikido would fail the test miserably.

If this offends anyone:  someone the other day called me "the most honest answerer in the martial arts section," and I liked the title, so I'm going to go with it.

  4. Hyouden that was unkind.  I am no fan of MMA/UFC but you can hardly say a professional fighter lacks hard work and dedication...further you go on to insult America.  That, my friend, is where you show your lack of basic akido fundamentals.

Americans are the hardest working, most industrious, most charitable and giving people on the planet...and we are not even a race!  Just a collection of all the people from all over the world who ever wanted to work hard to achieve a better life for themselves and their children...and that, Hyouden is the American dream.

    peace.

ps: love your anime...keep it coming!  :)

  5. Akidio is g*y

  6. Aikido is a pure TMA... TMA's weren't built to fight in an octagon for money... they were built around discipline and culture..

It's like saying why aren't there Rugby Players in Football, 2 different concepts, 2 different ways they live by, etc.

  7. In all honesty, I think it has more to do with entertainment value than with its effectiveness. No one would pay to watch somebody stand back and deflect attacks until the other fighter tires out or slows down enough to get a lock or the like.

As for joint manipulations being ineffective, I'll disagree entirely. The ability to perform simple joint manipulations has saved my life. If they didn't work, I'd have been stabbed.

Stop nay-saying. Shut up and train.

  8. small joint manipulation is illegal

  9. im pretty sure small joint manipulation is illegal in mma currently.  and its probably hard to get wrist or finger locks with those big gloves.

  10. Contrary to what cailano claims, it has nothing to do with ineffective technique. Rather, it's more to do with how Aikido operates vs. sportsfighting rules.

Simply put, Aikido is not designed for sport, although I'm sure some of their techniques could be used in the ring. If I understand it correctly, it's more... um... defensive/passive; the idea is to take your opponent's force and use it against him as opposed to just wailing on him. That doesn't fit too well into a MMA category; it's sorta like comparing apples and oranges.

  11. AIKIDO is preemptive in nature in that it seeks to control and restrain an opponent BEFORE it gets to the full tilt battle stage .

Your opponent suffers some pain which goes away immediately once the lock is released no one gets hurt.Small joint manipulation does work I have applied it on guys that can bench press 300 pounds bringing them to their knees and then immobilizing them with an arm lock or arm bar like you would find in any form of jujutsu. If your opponent is strong the range of movement in his joints is less causing him greater pain.

In a face off between mma and aikido I would think the mma guy would win aikido wasn't designed for that type of conflict but to change the attitude of smart asses before they decide they can or want to punch your lights out.

It is also the best escape art you can learn for those situations where escape is your only option.
