Why do we pick favorites?

Question

I don't know but I was just curious, how come in books and tv shows we pick favorites? What I mean of course is an example in Twilight everyone either likes Edward better with Bella or Jacob (but some people don't care). I just want to know why people decide who they like better in these subjects and some will stop watching shows and reading books because they don't end with each other. Just asking because I won't continue this tv show because the couple I like won't end up with eachother. I hope you understand what I mean because it's quite confusing. And please no mean comments.

it depends who they think has a deeper conection with the other person. or the type of person they look for.
