  1. There are some very valid points made here. While the airlines are making big money selling alcohol on board to captive customers, they're not going to hurry to ban it. I often have a little tipple either on board or in the terminal to relieve the tedium and general unpleasantness of air travel and I don't see why I should be denied this pleasure while air travel is (and is likely to continue to be) so ......unpleasant.

Oddly, I was on a flight to the US a couple of years ago when I had a run in with a particularly inconsiderate and unreasonable passenger next to me which attracted the attentions of the cabin crew. Whilst I was totally sober on this occasion, they had no way of knowing if I was under the influence but in order to try and diffuse the situation they offered me (and the other passenger) -get this- drinks!!!!!

    Go figure!!!!!!

  2. Well, what are you actually asking, about drunks getting on planes or people getting drunk on planes?

Any checking at boarding time or before would obviously not prevent people from getting plastered on the plane.

And who says those who may be drunk at boarding time were that way when they went through scurity?

  3. Airlines make money selling alchohol to passengers.  If the drunk doesn't bother anybody, nobody cares.

  4. Now hold it right there.  You are going to punish all drunks just because some idiots can't hold their liguor.  a nice buzz helps the flight go faster and I have been doing that for 35 years and have had no problems.  The concept is fine.  but... implementation would be difficult and personally, I would fight against the idea.  Basically you would have to ban all alcohol on board and have testing stations at security. I know many people who can be plastered and you just can't tell without testing.  Security lines are long enough now.  Imagine how much longer it would take to test everyone for alcohol and drugs before takeoff.  Its not going to happen.

  5. People don't usually go through security drunk.  They get drunk either at a bar in the terminal or on the plane itself, so security, in this case, wouldn't be very useful.  Those serving the alcohol would have to cut people off, or airline personnel at the gate could prevent an unruly passenger from boarding the plane.

  6. People who appear drunk at check in or at departure gate will be stopped and refused travel, it is illegal in the UK to board an aircraft while under the influence.

However some people can hide it well and it is only once airborne and altitude takes effect that the level of drunkenness becomes clear.

Some drunks will be no problem and just fall asleep, others become loud and aggressive.
