  1. One of the biggest dangers of hyperkalaemia is cardiac arrhythmias, specifically ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardias.  

    The reason that calcium-containing fluids are often infused is that they stabilise the cardiac membranes, preventing them from depolarising too readily (which is a problem in hyperkalaemia).

    In fact, calcium doesn't lower the potassium levels at all, but it is nonetheless given to prevent the cardiac arrythmias that can characterise hyperkalaemia.
