Why do we use removable covers on quilts and pillows?

They just seem to be a nuisance to me. Why not just wash the bedding itself instead of a removable cover? Sorry if this question seems stupid, or has some painfully obvious answer I haven't yet realized. ^-^;

  1. quilts are just too big to be washed everytime. and removable covers have different colors

  2. when you wash big things like comforter and blankets the stuffing inside can get ruined.  They have removable covers for that purpose. Plus its easier to fit in the wash. the stuffing sometimes bunches in one corner of the blanket after washing and its hard to fix it. Same with pillows.

  3. You can use a really good down comforter, lightweight for summer, dense for winter and have your room still be a match.  You can have a duvet that can pop into the washer and dryer and fill it with down or feather that is much touchier to clean.  You can swap duvets or innards for the season.  You can send a lavish duvet to the cleaners for a fraction of what it would cost to send the down interior.  AND, as a cost saver, you just wash the old comforter, stuff it into the new duvet, and have a new item without buying a new comforter.

  4. All i am going to ask is, have you tried washing your quilts or pillows? if not maybe you should try it, then you just may find out why we use covers for then.
