  1. Maybe we like to keep it impersonal, and distance ourselves.  Like, if we're gossiping, we won't feel as guilty.  Or maybe it's easier than really being committed to the conversation.

  2. Because it's quicker to say 'they' than it is to say 'Tom, d**k and Harry'

  3. This is done simply to avoid excessive repetition of the same names, and to save time by shortening lists of people or titles into a single pronoun.

  4. He's asking why they are high frequency words.

All languages have pronouns like "they".  Maybe it's something to do with them being quicker to say, or maybe they are easier to remember and use in spoken language

  5. because these words are high frequency words.

  6. because people love to talk about other people, its a way of life.

  7. Sociologically you could over-analyze it as such......we feel the need to separate us from 'them', the need to distinguish distinct behavior by individuals.

OR, you could just realize it is a simplified way of expressing the English language so that one does not sound as repetitious when writing or speaking.  (Ex:  John came over to my house.  John visits often.  John and Stacy are good friends of mine. vs. John came over to my house.  He visits often.  They are good friends of mine....which set flows better?)
