Why do weeds grow so well?

Also which plants/seeds can be sown now? looking for root vegetables thanks

  1. Weeds are defined as those unwanted plants that grow well.

    Bit like saying 'why does the sun rise'.

  3. They grow well because they are well-adapted to the place where they are growing.  This is as opposed to most everything you try to grow in your yard, such as Kentucky bluegrass growing in Massachusetts.  Not really cut out for it, so it takes work.

    Plant carrots, most peas can go in now, radishes.

  4. You do not say where you live so it is difficult to advise what you could start off growing now.

    If you are in the UK it is a little late in the season to start root vegetables.  If you sow them now and we get a late warm spell you might manage a quick crop of carrots.  You would stand a better chance if you could sow them in a container - I use old wooden wine boxes.
