I know the voice on the recording is the voice other people hear everyday, but why do we hear our own voices differently?

  1. The way you hear your own voice is modified by acoustic coupling

through bones as well as ear canals, nasal cavities etc.

when you hear a recording of your voice,it is the same as other

    people hear you.

  2. Just to clarify: it is NOT like the differing sounds from a police car. The change in pitch of a siren is because of the Doppler effect and relative velocity.

  3. ahhhh this question tasked me for a long time, I learned that the reason our voices sound different to us than the way everyone else hears it is that, when you talk all the sound waves are coming from your body, obviously, as a result, vibrations make it sound differently, another factor is, your voice is never completely intercepted by your ears.  This makes it sound different, just like when a police car with it's sirens is coming from behind you sounds one way, yet when it passes you it sounds different.
