  1. For three reasons: 1) they want to look ridiculously stylish; 2) they want to shield their stylish hairdo from the sun; and 3) they need something else to further the cluttering of their stylish closet.

The tradition of the big hats started WAY back when The Kentucky Derby first started... i believe that women felt that they couldn't see well enough to enjoy the race... also, horse racing was a sport merely for the wealthy or Royal (hence the nickname "sport of kings") and wealthy women dressed up everywhere they went, so why should the Kentucky Derby be any different??

  5. well first think. it will be really hot and they want to protect themselves in their head. they dont want their faces to get hot or sweaty. its a protection for your head. gives you less weakness.

  6. So they can watch the horses and not have the sun in their eyes and to protect their skin from sun burns.

  7. To shade them from the hot sun. Also I think it's a sign of social class.
