Why do world rankings matter to golfers?
For fairly obvious reasons, it is difficult to assess the performance of leading golfers without looking at their world rankings. Rankings matter, which is why golfers are always concerned about boosting their positions on the leaderboard.
Digging into Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is the only way to gauge the players' performances and predict who will be the star performer in future.
What is OWGR?
The OWGR is a list of worldwide golf players, in which, they are categorised according to their performance and achievements, respectively.
Every single move is recorded and affects the players' rankings. Players are rated according to their performance on the golf courses. Hence, it is a very effective tool to differentiate the best golfers from their peers.
If there was no yardstick (OWGR) to differentiate golfers' performances from others, it would be nearly impossible to calculate who is on top.
To be on top and turn themselves into star performers, golfers make all-out efforts to lead. However, it is not easy for every golfer to achieve the highest position and keep their rivals at bay, given the intense competition.
What helps players to stay ahead?
It is an uphill task to defeat hundreds of the international golfers to maintain a lead over them. Deep involvement and passion is required to achieve such an honour.
There have been plenty of leading players in the history of golf, who have remained on top for their amazing skills and statistics. One such example is Tiger Woods, who has won 14 major championships by far.
Tiger Woods is a good selection when it comes to analysing world golf rankings. The reason is, again, the same: his top position in the rankings list.
He is well known for his achievements and consecutive victories at different tournaments. Although he is not ranked on the first position now, his total lead of 623 weeks makes him stand out amongst hundreds.
Woods, the 36-year-old American professional golfer, remained famous for leading the money list for months. He was one of the highest paid players in the history of golf, earning $94,817,542 throughout his career.
Given the latest slump in his ranking, the 14-time grand slam winner is now extremely concerned and is trying to regain his lost respect.
Woods had to face a big letdown when he dropped from the 1st position to the 58th spot following his injuries and involvement in an adultery scandal.
Having fixed his injury problems and personal issues, Woods now claims to have got on a victory track.
He confidently participated in the Chevron World Challenge last season, breaking his long winning drought.
The Chevron Cup victory helped Woods bolster his slumping ranking to 23rd. However, it remains to be seen whether he will seize the top spot in the coming season.
It must be a big surprise for Woods' fans to see him back in action once again. Tiger has already announced that he is looking forward to participating in the 2012 events and will try to beat Jack Nicklaus.
World ranking matters to golfers very much. Similarly, it is also an appealing factor for the golf followers to choose their favourite players worldwide.
