If it it is so easy for worms to come up through the cracks in pavement when it starts raining, why can they not get back underground as quickly when it starts to dry up?

  1. dehydration...to the extreme

  2. They simply are not fast enough to get back into the grassy areas.  The sun quickly causes them to lose moisture and in short order they basically dry out, or at least lose too much moisture to keep going.

  3. they need surrounding traction. on the pavement the only have one surface touchng them they need to be surrounded
