  2. a)  Males have a single X chromosome and no additional X chromosome that could carry a normal allele to mask the effects of a defective allele on the single X chromosome.  Females carry two X chromosomes so a normal allele on one chromosome can mask the effects of a defective allele carried on the other chromosome.
