1. It is free, but it sounds like you somehow clicked into one of the pay portions, like the 3 in one report, or the credit score area. The REPORT is free, but if you want the score, it's $5.95 per bureau used. If you click on the 3in1 site, I think you pay, because it includes some other stuff, or it may take you out of the free report site. Try going into it again, and picking just one of the three main bureaus or a different one than you did the first time. Also, you should be able to access the report for 30 days after you initially get it. The bureau should have sent you an email about that.

  2. Annualcreditreport.com allows you to check your credit file, or report, three times per year-once for each of the three major bureaus-for free. Checking your credit score (aka FICO score) costs about $5.95. It's a secure site, and they will ask for verification. (This may go back a ways.)

The trick is to check with say, Experian in January, Equifax four months later in May, and TransUnion fours months after that in September. The next one will be in January the following year.

It's a good idea to check with each bureau like this periodically so you can catch mistakes on your file. They don't all report to each other, nor do all businesses correspond with each of the three bureaus.

Mistakes happen to everyone- You have to protect yourself. For tips on how to protect your credit, visit MSNMoney. Liz Pullman(Weston) does some really good articles.

  3. I used it & it was free for your credit report. It does cost for the credit score though.
