Why do yellow tinted sunglasses make the world appear brighter?

From a purely 'physics' point of view, any kind of filter will reduce the total amount of EM radiation passing through it. However, when I wore my friend's yellow tinted sunglasses today, the world 'appeared' to be brighter as a result.

Why is this?
