  1. Americans are fool persons and don't know what is good here.  They prefer  the letter of the song "Girl of Ipanema" and " Wonderful City" and imagine that Rio is so great.  I live in Ouro Preto, safer, more beautiful and source of culture and barroque, for example...

  2. Because it simply is the most AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS city in the world, period!

From someone who has seen the world, with a carioca heart.

The places you mention don't have the charm, 'ziriguidum' of Rio.  The city has its problems, but its beauty is second to no other place in the world, and the people...  oh, the best!

  3. i hate tourists. and there are favelas and slums around the whole country. why do you think they rob the tourists ? tourists have NO IDEA where they are, and dont realize, brasil is a 3rd world country, and end up complaining when they get back home

  5. I don,t care what people say...but  RIO IS RIO  PERIOD

  6. why do you care the tourism will help with the economy so the area wot be slums anymore.

  7. Like it or not, Rio de Janeiro is the popular visual most of the world has of Brasil.  Yes, there are favelas and crime, but it is still a beautiful locale.

Still, I agree with you that there are many other locations in Brasil that merit consideration for tourists.  Curitiba is renowned as a beautiful, safe city.  I loved Campos do Jordao when I visited there.

Most tourists tend to stick to the "tourist" areas (that's why they're known as tourist areas).  Personally, I prefer to get out and experience the lesser known areas and get to know the people and culture.

  8. Thanks for the tips, I'll keep those in mind!

  9. I think its because Rio de Janiero and Saõ Paulo are just a few of the Brazilian cities Americans hear much about.  The majority of the cities you listed with the exceptions of Porto Alegro and Salvador  I am familiar with...So, I think Americans (the average American traveler) go to what they're presented with as far as travel options and appeal.

  10. I agree with you. I'm also brazilian and I don't understand this fascination about Rio. The city is so overrated, there is nothing special about it. There are prettier and better cities in this big contry, there is much more to see here.

  11. Man, you are a moron and certanly not from Rio.

The fact is everybody is jealous of Rio, our accent, our scenery, the girls, the easygoing attitute...

Manaus? Porto Alegre? Belém? Salvador? That's rich, Salvador and Belem are really clean.

Go back to whichever hole you escaped from, probably somewhere in São Paulo...

You know happens here? Like underaged girls thrown into jails with adults in... Belem?

Belo Horizonte? Cammon! There's absolutely nothing Belo about that and that accent makes you wanna puke.

BTW, Buzios is in Rio state and the best destination in Brazil, but some people are after bigger cities.

Go have a vacation in Brasilia, you deserve it.

    Way to go Saci.

  12. It's got nice beaches and can be reached by a "direct" flight.  I suspect that when the U.S. and Brazil have an open skies agreement, American tourists will disperse more.  But there is always a tendency for most people to go to a country's most famous city first (e.g. Paris, Bangkok, Tokyo, etc.).

  13. Rio is the cradle of SAMBA, rich culture, night life, designer clothing.  As a Brazilian you've got to admit Rio has a lot to offer and once there you can go to Buzios, Angra, petropolis and so on.

I'm Paulistano, therefore I inherently do not like cariocas, but Rio is our Nation's main touristic destination.

  14. because rio is the most famous brazilian city.it  has everything that usually represents brazil in the world:beaches, women in bikinis, carnival and bossa nova.when these guys think about brazil, they think about all these things that are in rio de janeiro.it`s like when you wanna go to france and the first thing you wanna see is the eiffel tower that is in paris.i`m sure there are other beautiful cities to see there, but paris represents all things we wanna see when we go to france.that`s the fact.i don`t think it`s fair.i  am from belém and i agree that there are other amazing places to see that deserve more attention than they get.

  15. My dear envious compatriot...

Rio is the most beautiful place in the entire world. If you don´t think so, it is because you haven´t traveled enough - or maybe have never been here in Rio. I am sorry about that.

An advice for non-Brazilians: everything you hear about Rio is probably true. I mean, all the good and bad things - and there´s much more, things that you will only be able to experience if you come here. It is a big city, where you can find people from all over the world. The setting is unbelievable. Most of the people you will find will be really amiable, warm and welcoming. Probably the most beautiful people in the world, because of the lucky mix of races together with outdoors physical activities.

All the other places mentioned by the asker are really great. I´ve been to all of them, and I can recommend each one (except Curitiba, really tasteless for tourists) and many other destinations - but few people will be able to speak English, and services are usually not good for American/European standards of comfort.

Anything you can find in other destinations you can find similar in Rio: beautiful beaches, forests, waterfalls, good hotels and restaurants, SO many interesting attractions (christ statue, sugar loaf, botanical garden, old Rio, tropical islands, museums, nightlife, fortresses, cultural centers, adventure sports etc)

I always feel sorry when I hear that someone died without seeing Rio with his own eyes, at least once.
