Why do you cancel documentary stamp in legal document in India?

Once you have document notarized, the documentary stamps that you put on the document is stamped "cancelled"

  4. Those stamps are the legal fee paid to and collected by the treasury of the local government. To avoid its misuse or re-use, the pasting stamps are "cancelled" or "crossed" or discharged in some evident way. If the stamps are franked by machine, no such thing is done on them.

    Everywhere in the world this legal fee is paid and ensured that no misuse takes place. India is no exception, but has its own way of doing things.
