Why do you do that when you smoke?

when ur smoking hookah or shisha why do people always put their finger over the tip where you smoke it at?

like where you put your mouth on the hose thing? why do people cover it with their finger after they take a hit?

should everyone do it? lol please let me know :)

It's not so smoke escapes, it's basic physics. By creating a low pressure imbalance in your mouth (sucking) air is forced from the base to create another low pressure imbalance in the base which pulls the smoke into the water. If there is another hole in that system the low pressure imbalance in the base is negated because the offset of normal pressure from the other whole so there will be some suction but not as much as it should be.  

Thus the invention of Auto Seal Hookahs!

And for those that don't have Auto Seal Hookahs... Rubber Hose Caps.

This only applies to multi-hose hookahs only. If people are doing it on a single hose... it's just habit.

Only do it you are on a multi-hose, non-autoseal hookah!

So the excess smoke that you couldn't inhale doesn't escape. I think it's good a idea because you can then pass it to someone to take the rest of the smoke and it isn't wasted.

edit-  What stuie is talking about is why other people cover the hose while someone is taking a hit- so the person hitting can suck enough smoke in. If you are asking why you cover the hose after you hit it, it's so smoke doesn't escape.
