what (experiment or observation or a major discovery) led them to think the twisted way instead of assuming the cat must have absolutely dead

  1. I think it was the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Thats the one that says you can't know a particle's position and momentum both. Kind of like the cat, once you pinpoint its position (inside the box), the box is in the way and you can't observe other properties of the cat like its momentum or the fact that its dead.

  2. You need to learn about necessary and sufficient causes.

And you must also understand that semantics are very important.

Get those two things right and Schroedinger's Cat will be a piece of cake.

    Good luck

  3. Schrodinger's Cat is a thought game- it would not work in real life because of the second and third law of thermodynamics. For example, a dead cat does not emit any heat, making the box containing the box slightly colder, making the box itself able to indicate if the cat is alive or dead. It is simply a useful way of thinking about the paradox that observations of reality affect how reality behaves. All being said, Schrodinger's Cat is a direct result of Wave/Particle Duality, and more importantly the results of the famous Double Slit experiment. I won't run through the experiment because it is rather complicated, so here's Dr Quantum to explain it for you :) (seriously, this seems like a kid's program, but just wait around and your mind will be blown by the paradoxes of Quantum Mechanics).
