I fight because it's the purest form of competition. Pitting yourself in a raw physical contest to see who is better. It's a fantastic feeling.

  2. When i do my competion fighting, i fight because through competition, we can find ourselves.

If i have to fight a real fight on the streets, it is only to protect my life, and the people i care about.

  3. Me and my friends grapple just for the fun of it. Its like a chess mach with physicality involved. Some people do Sudoku's. Some people fight.

  5. live to fight, fight to live porra!

  6. I don't really fight. We spar hard in class to work timing, conditioning, footwork, breathing, and movement, but I have no interest in fighting, either in a ring or on the street.

I choose not to fight in a ring mainly because I feel I have nothing to prove to myself, and quite honestly I cannot afford to get hurt and not be able to work with a family depending on me, over proveing myself to anyone. I do not street fight for basicly the same reason's, adding in that prison uniform's do nothing to flatter my figure.

I feel I have nothing to prove to anyone, including myself, because of the way we train in my class. Self defense is done full speed and power from the attacker, and if you don' defend yourself well you are going to feel some pain. Also surviving a knife attack(real life) makes me pretty confident that I can take care of business when I need to. Quite honestly the fight I have had, and still have against a substance abuse problem is far more challenging then anything somebody could throw at me in the ring or on the street.

I don't look down on people who choose to fight and prove themselves in a ring, I actually admire them for it, because it is not easy.

I despise anyone who engages in street fighting, especially if they are a trained MA.

  7. Well...darn good question.  When I was in the Army it was training at first, part of my 90 day Combat Fitness course, for the next 10 years it was for survival on the streets/battlefields of my area of operation. When I lived in South Africa, again it was for survival.

I teach Krav Maga because it is part of my skill set, mostly at schools and community centers.  I study Taiji and practice push hands because it is part of the learning experience of this vast treasure of knowledge.  I study Combat SAMBO because it is fun.

Now I love to push hands, grapple, learn and teach, fighting should only be for survival, something I always try to impress upon my students.

I do Tae Kwon Do coz it makes me feel abit more confident when i walk into a room. I think to my self. 'If anyone starts on me i have a pretty gd chance of comeing out ontop. Also school can get abit rough so its better to have a few tricks up your sleave

  9. am a fantastic fighter! I LOVE TO FIGHT! its just plain fun! its a great way to learn to use your moves on a moving person and you get a little ego boost every time you win ^_~ especialy if your a girl beating the c**p outta the boys

im a girl an im 17

  10. I fight because It is a great challenge. It shows who the better athlete is because, trust me, a 6 min. wrestling match or a 15 min. fight is a bigger challenge than playing some other sport. Because when something goes wrong in a fight you cant blame a teamate for your loss it is solely ur actions that decide ur win or loss. I am 17 and I have been wrestling for 4 years and I have been training to fight mma for 3 1/2 years. and it is the best thing Ive have done with my life, because it gives me an outlet for all the anger ive had when my mom and other close family members have died and if not, only God knows were id be right know.

  11. I'm training for MMA right now and the reason I fight is because it's a challenge.  It's a sport (while some may disagree) and in it, it's my objective to beat my opponent to win the fight or match.  Plus, it's a great work out

  12. In my Boston neighborhood back in the late 50s and early 60s fighting was a necessary ability to be able to defend yourself.  The martial arts were a pragmatic and useful skill to have.

There were three boxing gyms in my Boston neighborhood alone, and over a dozen boxing gyms throughout Boston at one time.  For some reason these boxing gyms attracted and produced - bullies.  Most the thugs and bullies and street gang members (on every street corner) had boxing experience, from high amateur to low level professional.  They could really hurt you.

I didn't care for boxing.  But I fell in love with the martial arts and used to hang out at dojos like a starry eyed kid.  Finally in 1968 I was able to afford lessons at an eclectic Judo/Karate/Jiu-Jitsu school.  And it changed my life.

I only fight when I have too.  I have never started a fight in my life, but ended dozens.  All my martial arts training and philosophy has been geared to personal self-defense.  I only defend myself.  I also don't take guff from ANY ONE!

Now that I am 50+ years old and my neighborhood has changed drastically thanks to gentrification, the amount of fights has dropped considerably.  But at least once a week I have some kind of altercation walking through Boston common at night or waiting for a train or trolley at some deserted subway station (and not a cop in sight), so you must be self-sufficient and take care of yourself.

AND that is one of the secret beauties of martial arts training: fighting teaches you how to be self-sufficient.

And as far as I am concerned, a complete martial arts system (like Kung Fu) main purpose is to teach self-sufficiency (some styles of kung fu include cooking, chess, and vocational training).  And these 'complete' systems of fighting have my most respect.

  13. Age 23

I think it is necessary to avoid fighting.  You never know how skilled or insane someone is, so it is foolish to pick a fight.  I once picked a fight as a teenager, and though I won, someone later tried to mug me that night (I was having a bad day).  I was sore from the previous fight, and barely defended myself.  I could have been killed that night, because I wasted my energy on someone I could have shrugged off.  When I spar, however, I try to bring the full intensity of a real fight into the dojo.  Those I spar with know this, and I expect nothing less from them.

  14. b/c   people are mean girl not tellin age

  15. Male, 14

Because I live in a neighborhood where gangs always jump people and my options were join a gang or martial arts. I choose martial arts and I couldn't be happier.

  16. sorry i don't know

  17. I avoid fighting. I have only ever attacked someone once in my life and that was because it was provoked, also it was only one hit from me. He ran up behind me and jump kicked me in the back for no reason and continued running so I chased him down and slammed him head to the floor. I want to learn Systema and/or Krav Maga so I can better defend myself and those around me, however, the facilities needed are unavailable to me.

  18. Because I have two kids that i need to support and fighting gives me the financial means to do so. it also allows me to spend more time with them than I would if i worked a regular job.

  19. for self defense    male 47

  20. To defend myself. If you went to my school, you would know what I am talking about.

  21. I train in MMA as an outlet for years of pent up rage and aggression from growing up in abusive household. I'm 25

  22. It depends on what causes the fight, in the real world/on the street, I only fight if all other options have been exhausted.  I'm not afraid to throw a punch but I now question the need to.  In competitions, I've wrestled for 10 years and now studying Taekwondo for over a year.  I've done MMA.  It's just for fun, if I win great, if I don't, as long as I did my best, I'm good with it.
