  1. Most spiders are nocturnal. Only a few out of the many hundreds are diurnal. The black widow is one of the spiders that is very deadly to humans ( all spider has venom, but only a few spiders have the true lethal venom that can kill other, much larger animals, including humans), and is usually found in the southwestern parts of the United States. Even though the climate is dry there, they try to find some of the most moist spots that they can find ( this includes attics, garages, basements, and even the living areas). These spiders hunt at night (like most other spiders). If you see a spider active in the day, it may be looking for something extra to eat, looking for a mate, or looking for  a new spot to make its web.
