Why do you forget things when you get a concussion?

I had a real bad concussion i cant remember the technical term but its when the brain hits both the front and back of the skull. Now my question is why does the brain forget the time leading up and time after hitting my head. I've also forgot about an event that happened a year or so before that happened, any answers as to why I don't know how i got my concussion. My friend who was with my filled me in

its caused by amnesia. when you get a concussion u hurt ur brain causing ur brain to go through some damage. ur memory is stored in the brain so that part of the brain may be bruised. u may get ur memory back or not and be patient. little things can trigger ur memory too. the same thing happened to my dad after a big accident but its been years and he is fine now
