I was thinking about this today as I stood in a long line at the store. At the front of the line was a woman with a pile of wic checks getting a bunch of baby formula. People in line were giving her this look like "ugh, how dare you exist".
American's give money to everyone. We as a nation just gave a ton of money and food and medical supplies to Georgia. We as a nation are always donating food and money to other countries. You never hear anyone complaining about that. But when we feed the hungry and under privileged children in our own country people get really defensive.
And I'm not talking about people who have kid after kid to stay on welfare. I'm talking about the families who truly need it. The families where one parent gets laid off and the only way to make ends meet is to get a little help. A temporary solution.
Now, the people in line at the store didn't know this woman's story. They just all judged her for wasting their time and holding up the line to get her baby some food. It can't be jealousy. If you don't have a child under 1, you don't need or want baby formula. It had to be their righteous feelings that they are better than this woman because they are paying cash for their stuff. It can't even be a "ugh, thats my tax dollars" because no one was shaking their heads at the newspaper headlines saying "Tens of thousands of dollars of relief sent to Georgia"... that is "your" tax dollars too.
Someone explain to me why there is so much negativity towards people getting a little help. Again, not the people abusing the system, just those who fell on hard times and are doing everything they can to get back on their feet. You can't tell who is who.
And just to add, I was raised in a household with poor beliefs and my father was always talking about how the "red welfare states should get a job"
