  1. If you are on anti-depressants, or any medication for that matter, for an extended period of time your body begins to rely on them for regulation. When you get off of them it can cause withdrawal symptoms and other side effects that unless monitored by a doctor can be very serious, even life threatening. The doctor will monitor you for various issues pertaining to whatever medication you were on. They will also want to decrease your dosage over a given period of time rather than just stop you in order to lessen the chances of any serious side effects.

  2. Because one of the likely and possible reactions when coming off of anti-depressants is severe depression returning, and possible suicide behavior or thoughts.

Please note, that when a person is severely depressed, they are at that time not able to determine the severity of their condition, and because of that they are also not able to seek help for themselves.  Reasoning is impaired.  Actions would also be impaired or out of character for the person.

  3. Just like any other prescribed drug its wise to get off under docs supervision to be on the safe side plus you may get addicted them so just to be safe that is a good idea.
