  1. The time during a flight when the pilots have the most to do are the takeoff and the landing.  And since the plane's altitude is less, then if something were to go horribly wrong, they'd have less time to fix it before the plane crashes.

Electronic devices have a very small chance of interfering with aircraft's equipment.  I'm sure you don't want a lecture on electrical engineering, but any time you have current going through a wire, you have emissions.  Devices which are designed to transmit, such as phones, of course have much more emissions than something that isn't designed to transmit such as an iPod.  So, electronic devices aren't allowed at all when the aircraft is below 10,000 feet.  And transmitting ones aren't allowed during the entire flight.

Now, that being said, is leaving your phone on going to make the plane crash?  Well, it's never happened before.  But that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.  There have been documented events of instruments wigging out a bit, but they haven't caused a crash.  Search around on airliners.net if you want examples, this subject comes up there at least once a year - there is a pilot on there from a Turkish airline who had some of his instruments go wonky so he yelled over the PA for people to turn off their @%#@ phones and the instruments returned to normal.

  2. It interferes with the aircraft's equipement..>Thats what someone told me.

  3. during take off and landing are the two times that it is more likely for something to go wrong. so for your own safety they don't want you listening to your mp3 player that way if something DOES go wrong you will be able to follow crew member instructions. and hear what they're saying, also during an accident these items can become projectiles and cause injury on impact
