  1. Cycling shorts are designed to wick away moisture. By not wearing underwear, he is allowing them to do their job correctly. Underwear absorbs the water, interfering with this process.

  2. You don't have to.

    This ain't N. Korea

  3. He doesn't have to, but most people do.  And he isn't butt naked if he has on cycle shorts.

It's more comfortable to wear them without underwear.  It looks better without underwear.  A lot of sporting attire is like this.  I was a rower and we wore trou or unis, and you don't usually wear underwear under them.  These suits/shorts allow for more comfort and a better range of motion.  Plus they are more aerodynamic, and lighter.

Maybe you should give it a try.  Get some bicycle shorts of your own, try them with underwear, then without, see what you think.

  4. It gets sweaty down there and riding with those shorts w/o undies will help keep it breezy down there.

  5. When peddling a few miles; anything will do.  People who have bicycle shorts are usually peddling much more.  50..100.. even 200 miles in a day or more.

what is a no issue for your skin for 10 miles can cause serious, painful skin breakdown at the longer ranges.

Bikers turn to a variety of tricks and sometimes mere vodoo.  Once there was an internet "furor" over what Lance would greese himself up with in the hitherland reaches.  Turned out to be "ASSISOS".

  6. Cycling shorts or bibs are made to be worn without underwear. The chamois (the built in pad) is often made with anti-bacterial fabric and is designed specifically for contact with the skin. Wearing a layer between the shorts and skin will likely cause chafing, saddle sores, and all kinds of other irritation as the fabric will bunch up and get into uncomfortable areas. Both the chamois and shorts material will stretch and move with the motion of the cyclist where other materials won't.

  7. Because that's how bicycle shorts are worn.  the purpose is to provide padding, support, wicking away sweat, and preventing chafing.  Guess what hot, sweaty cotton underwear does to your nethers?

Nothing goes under bike shorts except chamois creme!
