Why do you like or dislike this name

Question

My hubby and I plan to name our baby boy (due in Dec.) River. Some people seem to really love it, while other give me funny looks. We don't plan on changing it, but I am curious to know why people like or dislike the name. What do you think? What type of person to you associate with this name?

when i think of river, i kind of think of sort of a hippy-type guy..its an ok name but all i can really think about is river, like a river where theres fish and stuff...lol..

Well, it makes me think of River Phoenix. But if you've already picked out the name and love it, what do other's opinions matter? To me, this kind of sounds like a stoner name, or a guy who would be in his 30's trying to start a band.

I think it will fit well with your family and all the things you like to do.  It reminds me of an outdoors type of person.  I dont think I'd use it for a son of my own though but thats just me.  Good luck and congrats on the baby!

I like the name River, Yeah it's different than a typical John Smith name but who really cares. Again I saw go for it.

I love that name, and there is a good chance no kids growing up will have his same name. Which is really good. It makes him individual.

It's not for me, but I like more conventional names.  I think of River Phoenix, one of my favorite actors, who died of a drug overdose.

well since you asked, i dont' have an opinion on it. i neither like it or hate it.  to me River is the the word river.  like Lake, Ocean, Apple.

When I hear the name I picture a bass guitar player in an unsuccessful band, playing gigs for pennies in any bar that will hire him-BUT I like the name overall.  Your successful child will just have to change all of our impressions of the name River;)

It seems to fit your lifestyle perfectly - I actually think it will be perfect for you to name your baby River.  It wouldn't work for everyone, but I like the name!  It's common enough that it's not weird, but still unique enough so that there probably won't be any other River's in his kindergarten class!

Just because you and hubby are hippy-ish doesn't mean your baby will be.  You are naming a child - not a pet.  River reminds me of River Phoenix, the actor who died of a drug overdose.  The name is not bad - but the connections with the name would make me uneasy.

well with how you describe yourself i would say of course the name is lovely, its a bit strange but no more so than Hunter and i like that name to. people name their children Fern, Holly, China, Sahara, what could possibly be any different about River. i think its great and reminds me of a guy (that you described when describing yourselves) :D

I would never take someone with the name river seriously, especially a boy.. he is definitely going to have a bunch of friends.

I personally love the name!!! I think it is a perfect name, and one that is very underated!

And I see a very succesful person when I hear the name River.

If it's what you want to name your kid, then it doesn't matter what other people think.  It is different, and hippy-ish sounding.  So, it seems to fit for you.

People will instantly think about the late River Pheonix..and I know I would.  Anyway, after all that has happened, I would not find it appropriate, but if you do then go for it..plus the name was so unique in the first place...even if you never heard of river pheonix, it still sounds like a copycat attempt when you could not find anything original yourself...it would be like someone naming their baby Apple after Paltrow's kid...as much as I adore the name River, it just won't work.

Well, this may be a little off the wall, but I am a huge fan of the band Hanson (who are all grown up now and have kids) and Taylor, middle brother, has three children, Ezra, Penelope, and River. His youngest is River Samuel. It's definitely a name for a unique family/individual. I would go for it if you are that type of people, why not? It suits baby River Hanson as far as I can tell.

I LOVE the name River, it kinda sounds cool and laid-back to me! Also, from what you said you and your husband are like, baby River would be really good! :)

Who cares what anyone else thinks, its YOUR baby and you can name it whatever you want to!

I think it sounds a little hippie-ish to me.....

I would never discourage someone from using that name though!  I'm sure it will fit your baby perfectly when he arrives!

There is always going to people who don't like what you name your baby (even if you went with a more traditional name). But just remember it's YOUR baby and people don't have to like it, they just have to respect your decision. River is not personally my style, but I have thought that about other names, and then when the child is born you fall in love with child and couldn't image a more perfect name for them. I think of a very sweet guy, who might be a bit of surfer/ hippie guy, and not afraid to be nice to people. Someone who isn't fake!  Sounds like it fits your family perfectly. Good luck!

Hmm I've never heard that name before, sounds very creative and fresh.. Kinda like Ginger or Pepper or GG.. Love it, and I'm sure it will suit your child.

i knew a girl called River...when i hear the name, it reminds me of a river, and that song by justin timberlake, cry me a river. it's not that bad.

It is dippy. It isn't white trash -yet - but it says to me mom and dad are yuppies or they are young "free spirit" types. Now, I don't mean to insult you - I am sure you are great - I am just telling you the straight truth.

My fiance and I are also very hippie-ish and If we have a boy the name would be Quentin Garcia so Yes I think River's a great name for your son
