Why do you not ride a bicycle anymore with gas prices at $4 a gallon?

Same as most - no shower facilities, no place to lock the bike up.  I'd even brave the dangerous neighborhoods if those two things were in place.

I should add that I do ride to the grocery store, etc, since I can lock up there, just not to work.

Might not have been the best place to put this quiestion, considering this people who answer regularly in this category DO rides bikes often...

I don't own a car- cycling is my main form of transport which is why I've invested in 3 bikes including an electric powered one. In the past ten years I've never used any form of transport to go the three miles to my work other than a bike.

i've tried it.  i have a great bicycle.  one of my friends does it.  i haven't made it work.

I have to drive 45 minutes to get to work and bikes aren't allowed on the free way where I live.

Well, it's kinda hard to carry six bags of groceries home on a bike, even if the store is only 3 blocks away.  Nor is it very easy to put a 24 roll pack of toilet paper from Costco on a bike, not to mention all the other c**p you have to schlep home.....as for work, it's a good 30 miles for me if I took back-roads, including a climb over a mountain, and there is no shower or anything at work.  Also, it's too freaking cold to believe in the winter when riding a bike in the dark.

I did ride my bike to pick up my car from the garage the other day.....the people working there looked at me like I had just sprouted horns and couldn't believe I rode a whole mile instead of waiting for the shuttle service.  Sheesh!
