Is it hidden among the big buildings or do they use a different type of system?

  1. Cities have huge tanks that sit on the ground with capacities hundreds of times larger than elevated tanks. They are usually tucked out of site. They are usually on higher ground than the immediate area surrounding them; however, with modern pumps and back-up power sources this is not essential. They are sometimes screened with trees or a berm and unless you happen to stumble across them you would have to know where to look to find them.

The small town tank was a beacon in the days of rail travel and are much less expensive to build and maintain.

  2. the water towers are on top of the buildings

  3. In the country they use water towers as a good way to supply a fixed pressure for intermittant use.

In the city, there are so many users that the use is continuous, and you can supply it with pumps that are always running.

    .

  4. In my town they have it near a bunch of homes and shops.

I really don't know though, good question!

  5. in general cities have their inbuilt main water system where water need not be stored and is available direct on tap.

each building needs to have its own water storage - which can be done either underground through sumps or overhead through water tanks. these tanks dont have to look like tanks - most often is integrated into the design and concealed from view. Water tanks therefore can be plastishell and doesnt have to be concrete.

The underground sump system is used ideally and from here its pumped to all the lines that need water. Hope this helped!

  6. they have that old water tower in downtown chicago, so it was functional a long time ago.  but then chicago was a big city a long time ago too so yeah.
