Assalaam O Alaikum

Now, many people sy music is haram while some disagree.

I say music is NOT haram!

I want to know why people think music is haram!

Read this:

When the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW arrived in Medina, the people that were there to receive him, had played a musical instrument. It was kinda like a drum-like thing and they were singing the Qaseeda! Now if music is haram The Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW would have told them to stop playing the musical instrument!

Wassalaam

Thank you for all of your answers

  1. A Muslim scholar answers this question in a most eloquent way....

    www dot youtube dot com/watch?v=h4_KDrwQW8o

love for all, hatred for none

  2. sis i do not think it's haram. That drum you are talking about, the duff...... it was permitted.

Now, during the time of the prophet they did not have the violin, the chello, the piano, etc etc.

Do you think he would have forbidden those had they been around and only would have allowed the duff?

Would be a bit weird huh?

About that quran verse where some make from 'idle talk'(singing music etc.....) that's just interpretation that fits there need. The actual word is not idle talk but hadith!!

Talks about other hadith than the Quran.

The Quran nowhere forbids music and singing.

    Just my opinion!

  3. Music to be Haram, based on the following verse:

"And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quran) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the h**l-Fire)". (Surah Luqman 31:6)

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood(r.a) used to swear that the meaning of idle talk was singing. This view was held by Ibn Abbas (r.a) and other Sahabah(r.a) as well. Ibn Mas’ood(r.a) used to say that Music is to the hypocrisy as water is to a plant. The scholars are agreed that when singing is accompanied with music, then the prohibition is even stronger.

The other major proof is the Hadith reported by Al-Bukhari with a partial isnad (mu’allaq):

"From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcohol, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. Allah will destroy them during the night...and will change the rest of them to monkeys and pigs and they will remain so until the Day of Resurrection".

This Hadith was narrated with a connected chain of narrators by other scholars of Hadith such as Al-Ismaili, Abu Dhar, Abu Nuaim, and Al-Tabarani. It is authentic.

Singing and the playing of the daff (a large tambourine like instrument) is permitted on special occasions like the 2 Eids and Marriage as Hadith gives evidence to it.

    _______________________________

The Hadith you wrote is an weak Hadith.

  4. The first poster is right, the duff is allowed. There is a hadith closest to it's meaning, that the bell is the instrument of the devil. No offense, but it's not up to you to say what is halal or haram, Allah has declared all that already and we as people have no right to go against the word of Allah (SWT.)

  5. i think ifd you listen to it ,and have sexual desire or a bad feeling perhaps. then yes its haram

    otherwise it is not

  6. not at all haram..

    The Followers of Baseless Teachings

31:6 Among the people, there are those who accept baseless hadiths to mislead from the path of God without knowledge, and they take it as entertainment. These will have a humiliating retribution.

31:6 Wamina alnnasi man yashtareelahwa alhadeethi liyudilla AAan sabeeli Allahibighayri AAilmin wayattakhithaha huzuwan ola-ikalahum AAathabun muheenun

    Yashtareelahwa   Alhadeethi Liyudilla..

    does it mean singing ??

  7. Music isn't its the content of the Music that is

((And there are among men, those that purchase idle tales, to mislead (men) from the path of Allah and throw ridicule. For such there will be a humiliating punishment)) (Surah Luqmaan:6)

The scholars of Tafseer have stated that ‘Idle Talk’ refers to music and singing. ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood (رضي الله عنه) swore by Allaah three times about this verse being in reference to Music,

((By Allaah, of who there is nothing worthy of worship except Him, its meaning is Music)) and he said this three times.

    Sunan al-Bayhaqee (1/233), Tafseer Ibn Katheer, al-Haakim, Mustadrak (2/411)

This saying has also been narrated from many others amongst the salaf as-Saalih, such as Ibn ‘Abbaas (رضي الله عنه) who said ,

((This verse- And those who purchase Idle Talks- was revealed for music, singing and the like.))

Sunan al-Bayhaqi, 1/221 and Musannaf Ibn abi Shayba, 132/5

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is reported to have said,

((Among my Ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…)) until the end of the hadeeth.

    Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraanee and al-Bayhaqee; Ibn Maajah (4010). See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91

Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalaanee stated in his introduction to his explanation of Saheeh al-Bukhaaree,

((He did not place in it except the authentic Hadeeth))

Introduction of al-Fath-ul Baaree of Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalaanee

Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said,

((This hadeeth indicates that ma'aazif are Haraam, and ma’aazif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all such instruments.))

    al-Majmoo’ al Fataawa, 11/535

    al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer stated:

((And Ibnus Salaah denounced Ibn Hazm for his refutation of the hadeeth of music where Imaam al-Bukhaaree said "and Hishaam bin 'Amaar said"))

    al-Baa'ith al-Hatheeth Sharh Ikhtisaar 'Uloom al-Hadeeth page 35

    al-Haafidh al-'Iraaqee said:

هذا الحديث حكمه الإتصال، لأن هشام بن عمار من شيوخ البخاري حدَّث عنه بأحاديث... والحديث متصل من طرق: من طريق هشام وغيره

((This Hadeeth takes the ruling of being connected, because Hishaam bin 'Ammaar is from the Shuyookh (teachers) of al-Bukhaaree and he narrated from him ahaadeeth… and the Hadeeth is connected from paths: from the way of Hishaam and other than him.))

    Sharh at-Tabsirah wat-Tadhkirah

Some of the 'Ulemaa have reported Ijmaa' upon the prohibition of Music such as Ibn Rajab in his book, "Nazhatal Asmaa' fee Masaa'ilat as-Samaa'" where he quoted al-Aajurree saying:

وقد حكى أبو بكر الآجري وغيره إجماع العلماء على ذلك

((And Aboo Bakr al-Aajurree and other than him ruled a consensus of the Ulemaa upon that))

    Nazhatal Asmaa' fee Masaa'ilat as-Samaa' p. 3

    Abee Tayyib at-Tabaree also said:

أما مالك بن أنس فإنه نهى عن الغناء وعن استماعه … وهو مذهب سائر أهل المدينة

((As for Maalik bin Anas, then he prohibited music/singing and listening to it… and this is the Madhhab of the rest of the people of Madeenah))

    Abee Tayyib at-Tabaree also said:

لا يجوز الغناء ولا سماعه ولا الضرب بالقضيب ، قال ومن أضاف إلى الشافعي هذا فقد كذب عليه

((Music/Singing is not permissible, nor is listening to it nor is hitting the bars, and whoever ascribes that to ash-Shaafi'ee has lied upon him))

    Talbees Iblees (282)

Imaam Aboo Haneefah is also reported as saying:

أن الغناء حرام في جميع الأديان

((Music/singing is Haraam according to all the religions))

    Roohul Ma'aanee of al-Aloosee (21/67)

    Ibnul Qayyim also reported:

والشافعي وقدماء أصحابه ، والعارفون بمذهبه من أغلظ الناس قولا في ذلك

((And ash-Shaafi'ee and his elder companions and those who were knowledgeable of his Madhhab were from the harshest people in speaking against music))

  9. music is NOT haram and for all those who say it is rely their beliefs on false statements and interpretations

  10. i agree with you sister. music is not really haram but then if it will take you away from Allah then yes. as long as its proper that wont lwt you think bad stuff and such then there is no need to stop listening to it.

most songs have meaning and if the meaning is towards belief then cool if not then thats Haram sadly althiough it sounds nice

but heres one thing. i used to say that i cant play or listne to musci so i can get awaya from music class [worst ever] but then i ened up witht he ugly trumpet...i just fooled around.

people say its haram to play instruments, but hey every where you go thre is music right?

  11. some says music haram because it leads to undesirable things. like dancing kissing s*x liquors and addiction there by forgetting duties.

but it is an explanation and on other side if those prohibited things are not there, then not able to see it as haraam.

some say only one sided drum is allowed as the music intrument mentioned in the hadeeth quoted was using that.

    again it is also explanation-----------------------------...

Responding to same type of question on music,

    reading islam.com

    giving the answer as follows:

What is Music? The reason for posing this question is to draw you to an important point, i.e. Islam is not just about making something haram (prohibited) and the other halal(allowed). Islam addresses every issue before categorizing it as this or that. Take music for instance, we need to know what is it in order to put it under a certain category.

Music lexically means art of combining sounds of voice or instruments to achieve beauty of form and expression of emotion. So we can say that music is a pleasant sound, regardless of where it comes from. It’s one of the purest and most beautiful things in the universe. Thus, whenever we hear a pleasant sound that makes one fascinated, we simply feel we should praise Almighty Allah, Who sets the tone and rhythm of every sound in the universe.

Thus, music constitutes an important part of our daily life. Music is there in our day-to-day life: the pleasant sound of birds, the melodious mew of cats, the unique coo of doves, etc. All these are forms of music. No one can deny this. This is even reflected in our daily activities and habits: crying, laughing, yelling and so on.

Then, when it comes to conceptualizing music from an Islamic perspective, Muslim scholars make it clear that love for singing and melodic voices are part of man’s instincts. This reminds me the words of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, who says: “We can observe an infant lying in his cradle, soothed and sleeping by the sound of a lullaby. Mothers and nannies are always in the habit of singing for babies and children. Moreover, birds and animals respond to nice voices and rhythmic melodies. Thereupon, if singing is thus a human instinct, it is not for Islam to defy humankind’s instincts. Islam came to refine and promote the human instinct.”

So, in the light of this, we come to know that Islam has no objection to music and singing, as a form of art. This is as long as one abides by the noble principles of Islam. As we know that art is a form of expression and communication. It covers religious, intellectual, and cultural aspects of each society. Thus, Islam does not go against art, as long as it conforms to Islamic guidelines. This is whether it is expressed in literature, architecture, drawings, photography or film.

This actually makes it clear that Islam has its say in all man’s actions, in every corner of man’s life. This is the religion that regulates everything, in order to secure a happy and comfortable life for man. When you ask about eating, Islam says that you are free to eat anything, as long as you keep away from haram (things that are forbidden to eat) and from excessiveness. Allah says:

O Children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for God loveth not the wasters.

    Surah 7 Verse 31

And in the verse that follows this immediately, Allah says:

Say: Who hath forbidden the beautiful (gifts) of God, which He hath produced for His servants, and the things, clean and pure, (which He hath provided) for sustenance? Say: They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) purely for them on the Day of Judgment. Thus do We explain the signs in detail for those who understand.

    Surah 7 Verse 32

So Islam does not simply deprive its followers from good things of life. It just sets the rules to enjoy these things in a way that will not make us forget the main reason of our existence in life. This is the very point that is greatly stressed by some scholars who have aversion to music. Their main concern is how does man strike a balance between the enjoyment of all what Allah Almighty made lawful for him and the duty of maintaining close relation with Allah.

So for me, I don’t see any argument among scholars on the permissibility of music in Islam. The same applies to other forms of art. This is because the argument of those who oppose music is that it’s a form of laghw (idle talk). Meaning that it normally distracts believers from observing religious duties, and it corrupts the mind. So what they are saying is that a Muslim should not lend his ears to what will distract him from observing his religious duties and should not listen to what will corrupt his mind or distort his heart. This is exactly the same condition stipulated by scholars, who maintain that music is permissible. They never say that a Muslim should indulge himself or herself to any form of entertainment, which would take him as far as neglecting his religious duties.

Let me cite the renowned scholar, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, in his remarkable statements on the permissibility of music:

Not all sorts of singing are permissible. Rather, the permissible song should comply with the Islamic teachings and ethics. Therefore, the songs praising the tyrants and corrupt rulers collide with Islamic teachings. In fact, Islam stands against transgressors and their allies, and those who show indifference to their transgression. So, the same goes for those songs that imply giving praises to such attitude!

Also, the way the song is performed weighs so much. The theme of the song may be good, but the performance of the singer – through intending excitement and arousing others’ lusts and desires, along with trying to seduce them – may move it to the area of prohibition, suspicion or even detested things. The Glorious Qur’an addresses the wives of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, saying:

O Consorts of the Prophet! Ye are not like any of the (other) women: if ye do fear (God), be not too complacent of speech, lest one in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire: but speak ye a speech (that is) just.

    Surah 33 Verse 32

So, one has to show caution to music when there is softness of speech accompanied with rhyme, melody, and special effects!

Singing should not be accompanied with something that is prohibited such as alcohol, nakedness, mixing of men with women, like that is common in pubs and nightclubs.

Islam has declared excessiveness prohibited in everything, even in acts of worship. The same goes for excessiveness in leisure and recreation even though these things are permissible! This indicates that the emptiness of mind and heart has to be identified and tackled during man’s short-term life. One should know that Allah Almighty will ask every one of us about his life and his youth in particular, how he spends it.

Dear sister, you see, this is a clear-cut evidence that Islam does not consider music as something haram. It just stipulates for music to keep its permissibility, it should not involve anything haram, it should not be taken as a means of committing unlawful things. Music should not be used as a form of stirring desires in man. This will definitely open the door for Satan, and this is what Islam goes against. So music can be lawfully or maliciously used.

Thus, what I want to make clear is that music can be corrupted just as what people do to fresh air and water. But this corruption does not make all music haram (prohibited). Just as the pollution people cause to some water or fresh air, it does not make all the water and air haram.

It’s nice that you are saying that music reminds you of God’s glory. That’s something good, and that’s the purpose music and songs tend to serve. To refresh the mind and relax the soul, hence giving praise to the Great Lord that shows us signs of His Perfection in everything He creates!

  12. Only the daff is allowed. I have studied this topic and I agree with the scholars that say music is haraam. No matter how many "arguments" there are against this, I stand firm in my belief that music is haraam. Having said that, I'm not the type to say you're going to h**l if you listen to music. It is up to you what you want to believe.

Growing up, I wasn't told music is haraam. My family played it at weddings and everything. But when I was in madrasah, we actually studied about it and that's when I started trying to give it up.

    EDIT

If you read Music Exposed by Siraj Lambat, it may provide you with some valuable insight into the world of music. Just think about it, how much has music "brainwashed" the world... It's EVERYWHERE, on TV, radio, in shops, schools, cars, billboards, "nasheeds", phones, and it's even made it into the mosques where ringtones go off!! Remember when he was expelled from Heaven, Shaytaan said to Allah (SWT), "‘Because you have caused me to go astray, I will certainly lie in wait for them on your straight path. Then I shall come upon them from their right and from their left, and you will never find most of them thankful." (7:18) He's outo get us, satanic whisperings and that. We can't even understand half the music we hear, it all enters into the subconscious part of our brain, read the book and you'll understand what I mean.

  13. because when growing up, thats what they were told.  I dont think music is haram (note i did not say songs) .

Some songs ARE haram to listen to.

  14. Music definitely moves you away from Allah and a person listening to music is 95% of the times a non practicing muslim ^^.

  15. i dnt believe music iz haram......itz da music dat has bad meanin in it...lyk cursing..etc..

  16. Music is not haram:

@Amallay: It's one thing to believe in the Qur'an and hadiths, but it's another thing to trust scholars who make fatwah.

  17. Drums are permissible to play, everything else is not allowed.

The Scholars said it was haraam, and i value their opinion over everyone else's.

  18. Wa aleikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh :)

    Q&A

Ruling on music, singing and dancing

I went to this other site for the first time,x*x, and typed in music and all of these articles appeared which said music, dancing, and singing in Islam is halal??? They said "as long as the 2 sexes are not close together and their is no drinking going on" etc. and they even have hadiths that try to prove our Prophet Muhammed s.a.w was ok with this??? I am very confused now... Could you PLEASE give a full, detailed explanation about the Islamic ruling on music, singing and dancing and when it is allowed, if it is even allowed at all.
