  2. A "red neck" was a coal miner who supported unions in the 1920's.  They wore a red scarf to declare their loyalty to the union when there were corporate spies and fighters to prevent them from joining the union.  Hundreds of "red necks" were killed in their fight to have decent pay and work conditions.

Today red necks are people who will fight for what they believe in and are usually lower social economic class who make do on very little with very creative means.

True Americans have this mentality...fight for equality, justice and the American way and make do as an independent without depending on the government to assist you.  Stubborn and proud.

Here's what wikipedia has to say on the origins of this stereotypical word:

Redneck refers to a stereotype of usually rural, Caucasian (i.e. white) people of lower socio-economic status in the United States and Canada. Originally limited to the Appalachians, and later the South, the Ozarks, the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, this stereotype is now widespread throughout North America. Southern comedian Jeff Foxworthy defines "redneck" as "a glorious lack of sophistication," stating "that we are all guilty of [it] at one time or another."
