  1. It's important because English is the most widespread language in the world. English has official or special status in at least 75 countries (with a combined population of two billion people). It is estimated that one out of four people worldwide speak English with some degree of competence.

English is not the most widespoken in terms of number of native speakers though. There are more Chinese native speakers than English native speakers for example.  But Chinese is spoken little outside of Chinese communities.

  2. It can only be considered "important" as a result of the extensive colonization that occurred under the British empire and subsequently under the U.S. empire. It was imposed the same way Latin was imposed by the Roman empire. And its future looks just as bleak.

  3. it's the international language.

  4. Because English is the easiest language in the world!

  5. Because, It is the third largest language in the world.

  6. Because due to the US's economic position it's been adopted as a sort of standard language for dealing with economics globally, although, with the way the economy has been spiraling downward, now might be a good time to learn mandarin...

  7. Almost all the people in the world speaks English. You just need to know how to speak English. It's part and parcel.

  13. Haven't you ever followed the world movement, the balance of powers, the governing power, the industry and all those realms?

It's important, and without need to think about it because of it's origin, Uk and USA, they have been influencing and controlling the world from the early 20 th Century!

So they have powerful industry and interfere in many domains== they need language=== since they are the powerful, they will use their language== who's powerless or less than them will use their language===they invent and we read and discover=== we need language...

No english = we can't communicate here, nor learn so much about the world, it's not my language as well but it's a lingua franca and we need it now. See?

  14. I think the best reason is English is relatively easy to learn for most non-English speakers(such as our Chinese people). hence, it can be easily accepted by most people.

English has the easiest grammar I think, without genders and the sentence structure is so direct with the most standard 26 Romance letters. I think everybody can read ABCD... even if they don't know English at all. So this becomes another fundamental suprior condition of English for learners to learn easily.

  15. All languages are important. They show culture and development of the world as a whole, and they also allow people to communicate.

I think that English is considered more important than other languages purely because of the sheer volume of people who speak it. English is an important business language; it is the second most spoken language in the world (Mandarin is first) and the most common second language.

Using six factors (number of primary speakers, number of secondary speakers, number and population of countries where used, number of major fields using the language internationally, economic power of countries using the languages, and socio-literary prestige), English is rated the number one most influential language.

That doesn't, though, mean that it is more important than other languages. :)
