Why would rich rulers want to pay to promote arts.

  1. They had more wealth than they could consume.

    Perceived status could result in real political power and material benefit

    in Renaissance societies.

    Status contests could take the place of real physical confrontations

    in some situations and that benefitted the whole society.

  3. Same reason rich corporations are patrons of art today - it's a socially acceptable way of showing off.
