Why do you think a horse that is the betting public's fave comes in last...?

Jeff, thanks for your candid remarks, Yes I believe that the whip is used to straighten the horse out, but isnt it also used for keeping the horse to task?

I didnt bet the horses.. ok the one I did, the horse and jockey literally sat at the back of the pack, with out what looked like any sort of desire to run with the pack.

I agree once you lok back over the PP's you can most usualy see the reason why a horse won, don't you wish foresight was as good as hindsight.

I did not believe that there was any stiffing, or funny play going on.. I was just wondering what an intention would be.

one, just because a horse is the betting favorite , few realize that really doesnt have much to do with how he performs... often the wrong horse is bet to favoritism anyway...there are times when the horse is on the track to get an outing, and will not be asked for his best because they are training to a particular race or trying to race the horse into shape... or even trying something like putting a horse on the lead to get some speed into him when his best efforts look to be off the pace, or to take the horse back to get him to relax off the lead to get him to rate off the lead in future races...much more to consider than just his odds and what his past performances and work slate tell you...

The trainer might be using this race as a "tightener" (a workout during competition)  in preparation for the next race that the horse is entered, with no intention of "being in the money" for this race.

Legal, yes (who would know, except tho trainer, joc and horse [of course] ) .       Ethical for the betting public, no.

Just trying to come in last wouldn't serve any purpose financially

for the horse's owner and handlers. By the way, legally, an owner, joc and trainer can only bet on their own horse in a particular race.

The whip is so over rated by the general public. It is not a gas pedal like in your car. Hitting a horse will not make it run any faster. It is a real attention getter for a horse, and will help in getting him to run in a certain direction, as they shy away from it.

"Stiffing" occurs a fraction of the time that people believe. Purse money is how trainers and jocks make their money. Horse racing is the most patrolled sport around.

Instead of wasting time blaming a jock or trainer for your loss, maybe check out your handicapping. I'll bet you 9 times out of 10 you'll find some kind of clue that should have tipped you off.

Its call a stiff job and it happens more than you think and don't let these owner,trainers and jockey's  tell you otherwise.There is more corruption in this sport as much as any.

Because once a lonshot is the croud's favorite, lots and lots of people will bet for him, and that's when he loses the comany makes lots of money! it's a trick. they use it to fool the customers out of their money.
