  1. Socialize: to place under government control or ownership

See, you aren't socialized are you?

    Gimme ma 10pts!

The answers you are getting from people trying to prove to you what you are or are not crack me up! They don't even know you, but they know all about you, don't they?  ;)

You know alot of these kids who go to school in the suburbs think they are street smart, but they are such little wannabes.

    My message to them:

You are not Tupac, DJ Jazzy Trevor. You are not going to grow up to be a model or a rock star. If you are lucky, you may get to be an accountant, a dentist or manage a Wal-Mart. You may not realize it yet, but those nerds you pick on today will be the people signing your pay checks tomorrow. You think Bill Gates ever regrets his choice to study rather than focus on his image? Go to a real urban ghetto, kiddies. You can learn metric weights from the dealers, and then you'll be street. As far as learning to be fashionable from public school; let me show you a photo of my hair in the 80's. It was a hot look in my rural KY school, but I was not going to make the cover of Vogue with that mess on my head. The same is often true today. Some public school kids are hip. Some are not. Some homeschooled kids are hip, some are not. Nerds can also be found in both venues. What is important at that age is that they are building their character, not their street cred. After all, isn’t the goal to land a great education and a job, not to survive on the streets?

North: Thank you. It is boring while I wait for the weekend and my youngin wraps up her school work. So, I poke around on here. I should be planning next weeks shopping list, but I am naughty.

Max: I though money was the root of all evil?

  2. personally i don't think that we are not socialized. i'm homeschooled and i'm a very sociable person

  3. I love evil's answer.  Because obviously if you keep your kids at home you never let them see the light of day.  I mean doesn't every parent who has their kids home all summer keep them in the basement?  What an idiot.  Only people with half a brain think homeschool kids aren't socialized.  Just look what public schooling produced by reading some of these answers.

  4. They don't go school so they dont/cant

    socialise easily

they dont know the latest things

i dno, there are millions of reasons it just seems geeky i guess lol, if i had a choice id rather go school!

  5. (v) socialize, (train for a social environment) "The children must be properly socialized" - Princeton

    ---

Those who think homeschoolers are not socialized must believe that the real world social environment is just like a bricks-and-mortar (B&M) school.

Let us explore this idea a bit.

If the Real World Was Like B&M School

    --------------------------------------...

    1) You could only go pee if someone gave you their permission

    2) Get sick for more than 15 days and you are kicked out of society

    3) Before you could celebrate your birthday, you would first have to pass an age qualifying test

    4) The only way to get to the real world is on a big yellow crowded bus with no seatbelts

    5) Get assaulted (e.g. bullied) and defend yourself and face the exact same punishment as the perpetrator

    6) Eat only food purchased from the vendor with the lowest price

    7) Do not talk unless you are first called upon by an authority figure

    8) Spend most of your time with only people of the same age (except for those in authority)

    9) Get teased for interests that are not "hip" such as music, art, writing, math, science

    10) All entertainment will consist mostly of events in a gymnasium - sit for hours on a hard bleacher - but NO TALKING.

    11) Only 5 minutes allowed to get from place to place

    12) Everything is segmented into 50 minute chunks

    13) Beauty and athletic prowess are glorified above all else

    14) If you are going too fast you will be forced to slow down or be given busy work

    15) If you are going too slow you will be forced to speed up or just be left behind

    16) Every minute of every day is planned by someone else

    17) Your personal interests and strengths are irrelevant - you must follow the plan created by the authorities

    18) You must be counted at least 7 times a day

    19) Your day in the real world begins promptly at 8:15 and ends exactly at 3:15.  This is indicated by a bell or buzzer.

    ---

Sorry folks - that is not the real world.  Although, scary as it is, I do believe there are some who would actually like the real world to be like B&M school.  Ech!

  6. Anyone who thinks that homeschoolers are not socialized must themselves be socially handicapped, incapable of making human contact anywhere outside of the classroom.

  7. Well, I can give you a good reason.

    Me.

    =/

  8. First of all...to Glee:  I get a kick out of you and I like your answers.

That said, my definition of socialization widely differs from that of the public school system.  My kids only need to do school in the morning, so our afternoons are used for sports, music, arts, volunteering, hikes, workshops, unstructured play meetings, gym and field trips.  They are getting to choose with whom they interact, so they are forming friendships based on common interests and true compatibility.  They're not just being separated by age group and expected to find somebody to tolerate.  When they were in public school, they were subject to the "socialization" that occurs there.  They were labeled, beaten up, given wedgies in the bathroom, called awful names I wouldn't even repeat, sworn at and believe it or not, stuffed in a gargage pail.  They had their lunches stolen or ruined, disgusting things put in their hair and their lockers robbed.  If that's anyone's idea of socialization, my family and I will pass.  By the way, bullying does NOT make you strong...it makes you bitter an scared.

  9. I think homeschoolers are socialized enough. There are plenty of homeschool groups and it's not impossible for homeschoolers to join a little league or martial arts class (like myself). We are up to date on the latest fads and things going on in the world, but since everyone has their own interests and styles, we don't always show it. Most of the time, we're more respectful and smarter (if not streetwise) than most public or Christian schoolers. By the way, I'm a homeschooler, in case you couldn't tell by the first person terminology.

  10. Probably because they are isolated from society.

  11. Because we lock them in the closet all day long and never let them see the light of day!

Now why all the thumbs down for those who thought they answered the question right? They think that locking them up is what we do and it answers the question!

  12. Because they dress like individuals and are usually polite.   They also may not know the latest slang and fads.  They do not resort to thinking with the mob.  Do we want our children socialized?
