  1. Because most manager have no idea what it means to be a manager. A lot of managers were probably outstanding employees who had great ideas and skills; this is probably what go them promoted to manager. However, once they are there they do not know what to do. They think that they can continue to do the same things that got them promoted, but they don't realize that it is a whole different ball game.

It is not surprising that we there are so many inept managers...

  2. Some people think that it makes them more valuable if ONLY they know how to do certain things.  They think it gives them job security when, in reality, it:

    1.  puts them in a dead-end job

    2.  puts the company at a severe disadvantage (in many ways, often financially) because people aren't cross-trained

    3. shows the person's insecurities and "control" tendencies

As one of the previous responders "said," -- good manager have good employees that make them (the manager) look good because the employees know their jobs and each other's jobs.

Think about it, if only one person knows how to do a job and they're seriously ill, or die, then what happens to the company???  Is that good for the company??

My question would be:  Why does upper management allow only one person to know how to do a job? or managers not to delegate?

I wonder, is this person the same way with their family?  Bet they are ... they need to be in control and feel needed.  They don't understand that other people enjoy that, too.  --  Being a manager is like being a parent ... a baby was nice, an independent adult that can stand on their own two feet is a blessing that took work to create and mold!

  3. A lot of managers are hired based on education.  A lot of well educated people.....lets face it, dorks.....just aren't people persons.  Yeah, it's great to read a book, learn formulas, and get a piece of paper that says your a smart person...however... when your entire staff is unmotivated, and simply not preforming, what page are you going to turn to for the answers?    It's not easy finding someone who's a true 'people person', and has the qualifications to back it up.  I'd put personality over qualifications anyday.

  4. Managers for the most part get there by crawling up through the ranks. They have been in the position they are running before. Now they have to leave that work to others. What needs to be realized is that the job is different. the work that was done is no longer their work. But the work getting done is. They need to let go and trust that others can handle what the did once. Then they must move on recognize the best of the people that fill their former position and shed those who don't cut it and build their own team.
