Why do you think mom's reaction was like that?

in a tv show russian it showed father and his wife and 6 yr old daughter were telling funny stories. then suddenly his ex wife appears in the room demanding to know why is he here and not at her home, she kept staring angrily at wife and daughter. then wife hugged her daughter more tightly. why do you think she reacted like that? so that the ex wife might not harm the daughter?

My guess is that the wife is being protective of the child.  No, she probably doesn't think that the ex will harm the daughter... I think that she just wants to comfort the daughter during this little moment of stress.  A mother's love is a mother's love, right?

Since there were elevated stress levels and a very demanding figure in the room, I'm sure the child would eagerly welcome the comfort of her mother.

probably not, in situations like that parents tend to not think about themselves and what they want to do to the other person *cough*slap the h**l out of 'em *cough*

They center their energy into their children and since the child may have been confused and frightened she probably held her child closer to make her feel protected and warm

Of course if the B*tch is crazy, she might be protecting her daughter from her...but I think this is more a case of redirecting her anger into something positive

That's just animal instinct. Any sort of 'threat' would cause any mother (be it human, tiger, buffalo, monkey) to try to protect the young FIRST.

to reassure the child that she [her mother] is there for her. the child probably has mixed feelings about losing her father to this ex wife. she is bound to feel insecure. so her mother holds her close, to let her know that no matter what happens, she, her mother will not abandon her. she [the daughter] need not feel that she has no one. the mother is reassuring the daughter that she will be well taken care of even if her father leaves  them.

to dispel her own insecurity. her husband  may leave with his ex wife. so just in case , he thinks of taking away her daughter with him too, she hugs her daughter to show that 'she is mine , you can't take her away from me'. if he leaves , then her daughter will be the only hope left for her. she doesn't want to lose her precious child.

hugging someone is used to show support and comfort. the mom might have done that so that she can comfort the child who is probably confused and scared.  also, the mom may also be getting comfort from hugging her child because it was probably a very tense situation as well.

It was probably just an automatic reaction.  You naturally want to protect your child in a threatening situation.  She had no way of knowing what the ex-wife would do so, she went into protective mode.
